Fungai Neni is a platform that was launched in 2009 as a repository for the public thoughts, opinion and commentary of its curator and founder, Fungai Machirori. When translated from Zimbabwe’s Shona language into English, ‘Fungai Neni’ can mean two things; ‘think with me’ or ‘Fungai and I’. Both meanings suit the style of this platform which constantly endeavours to be thoughtful, personal and inclusive.

Featuring a range of content – in the form of commentary, reviews, essays, literature, interviews, talks and news – Fungai Neni aims to raise new questions and debates; hopefully leading to greater understanding of, and interaction with, the issues that matter to this platform.

Who reads Fungai Neni?

The intended audiences for Fungai Neni include;

  • politically and socially conscious Africans, and diasporic Africans, with interests in pan-African issues, feminism, arts, culture and politics.
  • academics and researchers looking for perspectives provided in accessible and engaging language.
  • those who may not be African, but who have an interest in understanding the continent beyond the parochial narratives provided by the media.

What kind of content can you expect on Fungai Neni?

For easy navigation, Fungai Neni is arranged into three main sections, namely;

This looks at the intersections of life, art, culture and identity across the African continent and its diasporas. It will discuss any range of issues from food, travel to politics.

This will look closely at the feminist history, present and future. It will also feature book reviews, documentation of historical feminist figures as well as the important names and moments of our present time.

Just Being

This is a section that is intended to be more eclectic and will feature personal musings, poetry, photographic essays and other alternative modes of self-expression.
